Finding Security in Doubling Donor Impact: Sherry and Doug’s Story

Sherry Porter and Doug Hall

As a two-time cancer survivor, Sherry Porter believes the disease taught her to never look at health care the same way again.

Her experiences with cancer treatment at the QEII Health Sciences Centre first sparked her passion to support health care at Nova Scotia’s most specialized hospital.

“I have nothing but good things to say about how I was treated [at the QEII], how I was respected and how I felt important in the system when I was there,” she says.

She and her husband Doug quickly learned the importance of timely diagnoses and top-notch care, and how it plays a role in treatment for the disease:

“You gain a deep appreciation for the people who care for you — and for the technology they rely on every day. As patients, we often don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes, but I know those imaging tools can make all the difference in helping healthcare teams make timely, informed decisions.”

Which is why the QEII Foundation’s drive this holiday season to purchase Atlantic Canad's first photon counting CT scanner and a fleet of 18 point of care ultrasound systems means so much to the pair, who are donors and have been volunteering to help lead the QEII Foundation’s We Are campaign — an initiative aiming to raise $100-million to help transform care at the QEII.

“I serve as campaign chair and Doug as a member of the volunteer Campaign Cabinet. We’ve seen firsthand how philanthropy helps bring extraordinary innovations to the QEII, ensuring healthcare teams have access to technology that goes beyond what would otherwise be possible.”

“We’ve chosen to support the QEII Foundation through a gift of securities. There are many meaningful ways to make an impact — this holiday season, we’ve chosen to match every donation to this project, up to $211,000, because we believe every patient deserves access to the very best care — right here at home.”

Making a donation of stocks, mutual funds, or other publicly listed securities directly to a registered charity is considered a win-win way to give for many. Donors can receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the donation and, in most cases, pay no capital gains tax on any increase in value. This allows donors to maximize both their tax savings and the impact of their gift.
